No Going Back

“No Going Back: From a certain point on, there is no going back. That is the point to reach”

– Franz Kafka

No Going Back incubated at The Banff Centre during my 20-week 2012/13 self-directed creative residency part of which I spent 4-weeks squirreled away with violinist extraordinaire Andrea Neumann where we collaborated on György Kurtág’s Kafka Fragments. The idea to tour the program to new music venues across Canada formulated when discussing how to present the Kafka Fragments in concert, and so it was decided that we would tour this work in combination with piano solos by Brian Currant, Alexina Louie and Hope Lee performed by Rosabel Choi on a program which rather than defining us as a trio, presented us as three individual artists in collaboration. The Kafka Fragments were enhanced by a visual presentation, which took the text of the fragments and superimposed them into pages taken directly from Kafka’s journals and letters. This program was presented at The Banff Centre, New Music Edmonton, New Works Calgary, at the CMC Vancouver presented by the Little Chamber Music Series that Could, at Open Space Victoria and self-presented on Hornby Island as well as in Toronto at Gallery 345. It is my intention to record the Kafka Fragments…stay tuned for developments…
